In response RailCorp have denied that an overtime restriction is in place. In the letter dated 1 November 2006 the Manager of Industrial Relations wrote:
"In reference to alleged overtime restrictions, RailCorp reinforces that there are no overtime bans or limitations."
The letter refers to processes on stations consistent with a draft policy that was provided to the RTBU on the 1st September 2006 which this union has not agreed to and which should not be in operation.
Notwithstanding the chronic staff shortages on stations the RTBU does not see any reason for the vast majority of, if not all, positions on stations are filled.
RailCorp have committed to recruiting 112 staff by Christmas this year. The RTBU have advised RailCorp that we believe this is totally inadequate considering the amount of vacant positions, staff movement within the industry and staff that will leave the industry.
Members should continue to undertake risk assessments and pass these onto their managers/ supervisors and those with the delegation should ensure that they fill ALL positions at their station to protect themselves against possible prosecution under the OH&S act.
If members are advised that there is an overtime restriction in place, members should request this advice in writing and advise the RTBU of the particulars.
