SWINE FLU UPDATE

20 May 2009, 2:46pm

Following representations made to RailCorp the Rail Tram and Bus Union met with RailCorp Industrial Relations and Chief Medical Officer regarding their preparedness for a Swine Flu outbreak in Sydney and the impact this would have on our members.

RailCorp gave a comprehensive report on their understanding of Swine Flu and the background of the virus. They also gave a background to how the flu began.

It was reported that they had strategies in place to address a pandemic and these strategies were developed as a reaction to previous threats such as the bird flu.

Some of the preventative measures put in place are:

A wide advertising campaign amongst workers reminding them of the importance of personal hygiene etc.

Sourcing of Personal Protection Equipment for each front line worker, in the case of a break out. (Gloves, masks, protective eyewear and wipes).

Provision of this equipment when available to each workplace.

Timetable changes in the event of an outbreak.

RailCorp explained that we were in the "Yellow - Review, Maintain and Monitor" stage of the virus. There are 4 levels:

White - Prepare

Yellow - Review, Maintain and Monitor

Red - Pandemic

Green - Recovery

It was reported that we may never move to the Red Stage.

The RTBU will be closely monitoring events and members with concerns should consult their Doctor or RailCorp Chief Medical Officer.
